Black Friday DO'S

  1. Start early
Due to the popularity of Black Friday, in recent years, retailers have turned the event into a week-long occasion, providing new codes and discounts every day during the week leading up to Black Friday. Consequently, customers now need to be even more savvy when selecting their Black Friday deals. Although the extra days disperse the sales chaos and website crashes, they can encourage you to buy too early and miss out on better discounts further down the line. To ensure you don't fall victim to this, avoid panic buying. Get organised, do your research and take your time. If you're wondering where to start, simply follow the steps listed below.
  2. Check voucher code websites
Although retailers advertise a number of incredible bargains during Black Friday week, it can be hard to keep up with the myriad of offers. By heading to a voucher site before a retailer you are able to separate genuine bargains from the bogus deals that come with a huge list of terms and conditions. Voucher sites also display all of the current offers for each retailer clearly, on one page, making it easier for you to find worthwhile deals. Whatsmore, if you're browsing around for a discount on a specific item or category, you can compare deals from multiple retailers that offer similar products. This will save you the job of sifting through countless websites, looking for the cheapest deal. Voucher sites often feature deals and codes that you may not have seen on your chosen retailer's website too, so it's important that you do your research beforehand to ensure maximum savings.
  3. Use apps
There are many apps that you can download onto your Smartphone or Android which feature everything you need to know about Black Friday. Compare prices and view live feeds of new deals and price drops. It's also worth downloading your favourite retailer's app as there's often exclusive discounts and welcome gifts available for users. Not only do retailer apps offer discounts you won't find anywhere else, they also keep all of your details saved in an address book. Many also have a 'wishlist' feature that lets you save products you may want to buy in the future. For Black Friday week, this is perfect. Add the products you want to your wishlist leading up to the big day so you have them all ready and waiting. Then, in a few simple clicks, you can have your items in your basket with your address and payment information already attached. All you have to do then is add your Black Friday discount code or click 'Buy' and you'll have beaten your fellow shoppers to the checkout.
  4. Compare online and in-store prices
There is nothing more soul destroying than buying something and then seeing it somewhere else for a cheaper price. Three words - do your research. Before Black Friday arrives, make sure you have thoroughly compared online and in-store deals to see which option provides the best discount. This is essential if you're looking for a high value item. It may take some time, but the savings will make it worth your while.
  5. Write a list
Once you've browsed NetVoucherCodes, downloaded all necessary apps and checked in-store prices for the best discounts, you can make a list of what you want to buy and where you want to buy it from. List your product and it's discount; be very specific and stick to it. The final point is the most important. Going into Black Friday without an idea of what you want means you're more likely to get overwhelmed and spend on products you don't really need. Once you get online it's easy to become distracted with offer titles that promise huge discounts. However, most of the time, the last minute deals you find aren't much different from standard sale prices and wouldn't have caught your eye if it wasn't for the Black Friday tagline. By making a list and sticking to it you can ensure you don't get swept up in the chaos of the sale and emerge from Black Friday with bargains, not regrets.
  6. Check social media channels
Before heading online or in-store to buy your chosen product, have one last, quick browse through your favourite store's social media channels. Majority of the time, social media is the first place retailers update customers with the latest offers and exclusive deals. Supermarkets also tend to notify users on how busy their stores are and how much stock is left via social media, so make sure you're following all the relevant accounts to stay in the know throughout the entire week. It might also be worth turning on your social media notifications for the retailers you're shopping at. This way, you can stay updated without having to constantly refresh your feed, allowing you to get on with your day and minimise the stress of shopping.
  7. Check emails
Many retailers will bombard you with newsletters and alerts during Black Friday. Although these emails can be annoying, during Black Friday week they can save you a lot of time. Use your emails to keep track of sales and discounts. Simply, browse through them, delete the ones you have no interest in and keep the ones that could be of some use. Check out the products available under the deal advertised and make a note on your list if you find a good discount. Every morning when you reach for your phone, check your inbox and repeat the process. You can then make adjustments to your list as the week progresses to ensure it doesn't grow stagnant. This is a great place to start if you're unsure on where to find the best deals.
  8. Have fun
Finally, try not to stress if you miss out on something you wanted. At the end of the day, it's just shopping and it shouldn't feel like a chore. Get organised and hopefully you won't feel as overwhelmed next year. And if you do miss out on anything, don't worry, there's always Cyber Monday!

Black Friday DON'TS:

  1. Don't assume every deal is a great deal
If you find a deal you think might be too good to be true, it probably is. Sometimes, when it looks as though you're saving a lot on an item, you're actually not, retailers have just increased the original RRP. Make sure you check out the cost of the goods you want a few weeks before Black Friday, make a note of their standard price and compare the two during Black Friday week to avoid getting ripped off. Another way to do this is to use a price tracking website. These tools allow you to see a product's price history and compare current prices to original RRP amounts.
  2. Don't buy for the sake of it
Before making a purchase, always ask yourself “do I need this?” If you can live without it, leave it on the shelf. If you miss out on something you need, wait until the January sale. Many retailers also try to push multi-buy deals, when in reality it's cheaper to just buy the product you originally wanted. Don't get caught up in the sales jargon and end up buying two other things you didn't really need just because there was a deal on.
  3. Avoid impulse buying
To avoid overspending this Black Friday, try not to impulse buy. The more you impulsively spend, the more likely you are to buy something you don't need at an overpriced rate. Prepare a list of the things you're looking for and stick to it. It's much better to leave with the one major product you wanted at an affordable price rather than several smaller ones to make up for it. You'll only end up regretting your pointless splurge.
  4. Don't shop in-store
The best way to avoid all the fuss and stress of Black Friday shopping in-store is to not go altogether. Majority of the in-store discounts can also be found online (minus the horrendous queues and barging customers.) Oftentimes, online deals are actually better than the ones you find in the shops and can also be used alongside discount codes that aren't redeemable in-store. If you are heading to the highstreet or supermarkets this Black Friday, try not to get caught up in the chaos. Avoid barging, pushing or arguing with other customers. Christmas shopping should be merry; it's not the end of the world if you don't get something you want. There will always be other festive sales and more chances to save online.
  5. Don't rely on it for your Christmas gifts
You're sure to find a good deal or two on Black Friday, but don't rely on it for must-have Christmas gifts or this year's most talked about products. Although Black Friday is great for Christmas shopping, popular products tend to sell out super fast and really expensive items are often left at their original price or are only discounted by a small amount. Which? conducted an investigation and found that 85% of the products they analysed were available for the same price or cheaper in the six months before Black Friday. So, if your child mentions a toy that's selling out everywhere, just buy it there and then and avoid pinning your hopes on Black Friday sales, you'll only have to deal with disappointed faces on Christmas morning.
  6. Don't spend on a debit card
The best way to stay protected when shopping online is to spend on a credit card or through PayPal. Avoid spending on a debit card and consider one of these options to be absolutely sure your money is safe. Shopping via PayPal or Apple Pay is also a much faster way to move money around. These third party apps store your shipping and billing details without attaching any of it to your laptop. Instead of taking the time to fill in all your details and card information on each website you shop at, all you have to do is enter your password at the checkout and then click buy. This is especially handy for Black Friday as many of the products available are in high demand and sell out extremely fast.
